Generate big phat evolving PWM PADs with small memory

by Ben

Do you like evolving sounds?

Your sampler has a small amount of memory?

Here is my tip to fake Pulse Width Modulation (PWM):

+ Take a single cycle saw wave (or several samples spread across the keyboard). Find the perfect loop to have a steady tone.

+ Make a copy of the saw and turn upside down the copy. You now have a "saw up" and a "saw down" version of the same sample.

+ If you layer these 2 samples the sum will be null, you shouldn't hear anything. Now detune one of the 2 saws. You have a pulse wave.

+ Modulate the pitch of one of the saw by a LFO: et voilà, instant PWM.

+ You can fatten up the sound by making another dual saw (saw up + saw down) and detuning it by an octave or a 5th.

You can of course add any modulation you want (LFO, Env.,...) on panning and filter.

You are not restricted to saw waves, try with any wave.

Have Fun: Ben
